iPhone 17 Pro Max: Pro Performance on a 6.9-Inch Display
Announced by Apple in September 2025, the iPhone 17 Pro Max pairs a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz, so scrolling, gaming and video playback feel smooth and responsive. Apple rates the screen at up to 3000 nits peak brightness outdoors and as low as 1 nit, and it includes an Always-On display, Dynamic Island and True Tone. The front is protected by Ceramic Shield 2 with an anti-reflective coating, which Apple says offers 3x better scratch resistance.
The refurbished iPhone 17 Pro Max is built around an aluminium unibody with an internal vapour chamber to help manage heat. Apple says the Ceramic Shield back has 4x better crack resistance, and Apple rates the iPhone 17 Pro Max IP68 for dust and water resistance, up to 6 metres for 30 minutes, though water resistance isn't permanent and can decrease over time. The Australian nano-SIM model weighs 231 g.
Inside is the Apple A19 Pro chip, built on a 3 nm process with a 6-core CPU and a 6-core GPU with Neural Accelerators. Apple says the vapour chamber helps the A19 Pro deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation, which suits demanding games, video editing and heavy multitasking. The iPhone 17 Pro Max came in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, making it the first iPhone offered with 2TB of storage. Apple's N1 wireless chip adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and the USB-C port supports USB 3 transfer speeds up to 10Gb/s.
For photography, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has three 48MP Fusion rear cameras: Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto. The 4x telephoto camera offers 8x optical-quality zoom at 200mm and up to 40x digital zoom, and Apple says its sensor is 56% larger than the previous generation's. Night mode, Portrait mode, 48MP macro photos, ProRAW and spatial photos give you plenty of creative control, and the Camera Control button puts key camera settings at your fingertip.
Video is just as capable, with 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120fps and four studio-quality mics with wind noise reduction. Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro models were the first smartphones to support ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and genlock. On the front, the 18MP Center Stage camera uses what Apple calls the first square front sensor on an iPhone, with support for Dual Capture and 4K Dolby Vision video.
For the Australian nano-SIM model, Apple quotes up to 37 hours of video playback; actual battery life varies with use and battery condition. Apple says a 40W or higher USB-C adapter charges it to 50% in 20 minutes, and it also supports 25W MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging. The customisable Action button gives you one-press access to the shortcut, app or feature you use most.
The Australian model (A3526) keeps a physical nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM and supports Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance and Find My via satellite, plus Crash Detection. It launched with iOS 26 and can be updated to iOS 27.
