The refurbished iPhone 17 brings ProMotion to the standard iPhone for the first time. Its 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display adjusts its refresh rate up to 120Hz, so scrolling, gaming and video feel smooth and responsive, while the Always-On display slows down to 1Hz when the phone is not in use, keeping the time and notifications visible at a glance. Apple quotes up to 3000 nits peak outdoor brightness, which helps keep the screen readable in bright sunlight.
Covering that display is Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, along with an anti-reflective coating for less glare. The aluminium design carries Apple's IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. As with any phone, water and dust resistance can lessen with wear and after repair, so we recommend keeping your refurbished iPhone away from water.
At the heart of the iPhone 17 is the Apple A19 chip, built on a third-generation 3nm process. Apple says its 6-core CPU is 1.5x faster and its 5-core GPU over 2x faster than the A15 Bionic in iPhone 13, so if you are upgrading from an older iPhone you should notice the difference in everyday apps, games and photo editing. The GPU also includes Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing, alongside a 16-core Neural Engine. Storage starts at 256GB, double the previous generation's entry storage, with a 512GB option for larger photo and video libraries.
For photography, the iPhone 17 has dual 48MP Fusion rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view. The main sensor also provides an optical-quality 2x Telephoto, and you can shoot 48MP macro photos, spatial photos and 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60fps, with Cinematic mode and Action mode built in. On the front, the 18MP Center Stage camera uses what Apple says is the first square front camera sensor on iPhone, and Dual Capture lets you record from the front and rear cameras at the same time.
Battery life is a highlight. Apple quotes up to 30 hours of video playback (27 hours streamed), which it says is eight hours more than the previous generation. When you need a top-up, the iPhone 17 can fast charge to 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W or higher USB-C adapter (sold separately), or charge wirelessly at up to 25W with MagSafe and Qi2. These are Apple's figures for the model; real-world battery life on a refurbished device depends on battery health and how you use it.
Day to day, the Action button and Camera Control give you quick shortcuts and fast camera access, Face ID handles secure unlocking, and the Apple N1 wireless chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection are built in. The Australian model (A3520) takes a nano-SIM as well as eSIM, while some overseas models are eSIM only (see Specifications for details).
